A Bitter Sweet Moment In GAiN’s Medical Clinic

On the medical side it was an intense day on Tuesday, January 26. GAiN’s
medical team in Chambrun, Haiti, saw Bethany, a 1-year-old girl, that hadn’t eaten
or drank for eight days as a result of her mother rejecting her right after
the earthquake.  She had blackened, cracking skin that was sliding off her
body and she was bloated.

The team spent all Tuesday hydrating her and on Wednesday, January 27 our
director was told in the morning that she must get to the hospital
immediately. Just as the helicopter was traveling to get her and air lift
her to a hospital, they got news that she had died. However, the team told
us to still come as there was a two-month-old baby that just came in and was
in critical care and severely dehydrated.

In the end, even though the helicopter was intended for Bethany, this other
baby girl was able to use it and still make it to the hospital in time and
live. It was a bitter sweet moment.
